Animal Care & Control were
notified of a dog living tied up outside without food or water. They
visited the homeowners and were told to just take the dog, he wasn't
wanted. After he arrived at the shelter ARPO was notified of Major
and his condition, and asked to help. Erica Cooper caught wind of
Major and the mistreatment he had received; she jumped in to foster
him and nurse him back to health.
When Dr. Craig Johnson of Parkside Animal Hospital first saw Major,
he said he had a severe skin infection, a yeast infection of the
skin and possibly sarcoptic mange. His skin had seeping yellow sores
all over, and he was missing a lot of his hair. Dr Johnson also
mentioned the very bad odor that was coming from Major. And to top
it off, he had a fever of 104. Dr Johnson did a complete blood work
up and put Major on antibiotics. He was completely emaciated from
head to tail.
Dr Johnson felt like Major had probably never been inside just by
the way his skin was. Dr. Johnson said Major's condition was about
about as awful as a dog can get without being dead.
After weeks of medications, feedings and lots of Tender Loving Care
from ARPO Foster, Erica Cooper, Major started healing and gaining
weight. We are so proud to say that Major has been adopted and is in
his forever home being spoiled. Just as it should be....

Our most pressing needs are on Saturday adoption
days at local Petsmarts. We hold adoptions at the Castleton
Petsmart, 82nd and Allisonville Rd., every Saturday, except holidays,
from noon until 4 pm. We hold adoptions at various other locations
from time to time, in addition to adoptathon weekends. Volunteers
take the dogs on leashes and walk them around, talk to people
about ARPO and the pets we have for adoption, clean up after puppies
and kitties, etc.
Have you wondered what being a foster home entails? In a nutshell,
we ask foster homes to provide love, food, and shelter until a
pet is adopted. ARPO pays for all medical costs and we ask the
foster to provide high quality food, litter (for cats), and toys.
Foster homes must also agree to a home visit and to
bringing the pet to our adoption events on Saturdays.
As a foster home, you may choose to care for a puppy,
kitten, dog, or cat. Most pets are placed within 2 weeks to 2
months; however, some adult cats and dogs may take a little longer.
Our current foster parents tell us they receive great satisfaction
being the first stop rescued pets make on their way to a loving
home.
