August 2010

Sadly, stories like Tinker Toy’s are all too common.  This little guy was taken to Indianapolis Animal Care & Control (ACC) after being kept in a garage by his "owners". They had this poor pup wearing a dress ...
just a really disturbing situation.  ACC staff, as tough as they’ve had to become because of what they see every day, were so touched by Tinker that they were taking turns caring for him.  Thankfully, an ARPO foster mom stepped up and committed to getting him the full-time care he so desperately needed.  He’s a sweet little thing, extremely pathetic.  He’s getting good care from Dr. Johnson at Parkside Animal Hospital, one of several area vets we rely on to provide excellent care for ARPO pets.

The one recurrent theme in these horrible stories that always pulls at our heartstrings is the resilience and ability to forgive that these animals show once they are given real love and care.  A tentative wag of a tail, a little kiss on the cheek … both signs of the gratitude and love just waiting to be shared with some lucky adopter.

September 2010 Update

After two weeks Tinker Toy is out of the hospital and well on his way to learning how to be a regular puppy. Loves to play, loves his walks, loves to give kisses.  Now weighs 19.5 lbs ... cause he loves to eat, too!  He is almost done with his first round of mange medicine.  Still being treated for a secondary staph skin infection.  Recently Tinker’s foster mom noticed a new phenomenon …Tinker is growing hair!  It’s just peach fuzz right now, but it’s a start!

There are plenty of ways that you, as a volunteer, can make a difference in the lives of central Indiana’s unwanted and stray pets, including:

  • Providing a foster home for animals waiting for adoption -- Especially needed!
  • Staffing ARPO adoption events at Petsmart and other locations
  • Staffing the ARPO booth at community events
  • Transporting pets in a secure, temperature-controlled vehicle to vets and adoption events
  • Fundraising
  • Compiling and printing literature for mailing (newsletters, brochures, etc.)
  • Contributing your services as a veterinarian or veterinary technician

  • ARPO is growing! Click here for a list of current volunteer opportunities!

Our most pressing needs are on Saturday adoption days at local Petsmarts. We hold adoptions at the Castleton Petsmart, 82nd and Allisonville Rd., every Saturday, except holidays, from noon until 4 pm. We hold adoptions at various other locations from time to time, in addition to adoptathon weekends. Volunteers take the dogs on leashes and walk them around, talk to people about ARPO and the pets we have for adoption, clean up after puppies and kitties, etc.

Become a Foster Home
Have you wondered what being a foster home entails? In a nutshell, we ask foster homes to provide love, food, and shelter until a pet is adopted. ARPO pays for all medical costs and we ask the foster to provide high quality food, litter (for cats), and toys. Foster homes must also agree to a home visit and to bringing the pet to our adoption events on Saturdays.

As a foster home, you may choose to care for a puppy, kitten, dog, or cat. Most pets are placed within 2 weeks to 2 months; however, some adult cats and dogs may take a little longer. Our current foster parents tell us they receive great satisfaction being the first stop rescued pets make on their way to a loving home.
