General Opportunities
There are plenty of ways that you, as a volunteer, can make a difference in the lives of central Indiana’s unwanted and stray pets, including:

  • Providing a foster home for animals waiting for adoption--Especially needed!
  • Staffing ARPO adoption events at Petsmart and other locations
  • Staffing the ARPO booth at community events
  • Transporting pets in a secure, temperature-controlled vehicle to vets and adoption events
  • Fundraising
  • Compiling and printing literature for mailing (newsletters, brochures, etc.)
  • Making follow-up phone calls from home
  • Contributing your services as a veterinarian or veterinary technician
  • Providing dog obedience training or behavior expertise with dogs and cats
  • Grooming cats or dogs
  • Sewing dog bandanas personalized with "ADOPT ME"

Our most pressing needs are on Saturday adoption days at local Petsmarts. We hold adoptions at the Castleton Petsmart, 82nd and Allisonville Rd., every Saturday, except holidays, from noon until 4 pm. We hold adoptions at various other locations from time to time, in addition to adoptathon weekends. Volunteers take the dogs on leashes and walk them around, talk to people about ARPO and the pets we have for adoption, clean up after puppies and kitties, etc.

Foster Homes
Have you wondered what being a foster home entails? In a nutshell, we ask foster homes to provide love, food, and shelter until a pet is adopted. ARPO pays for all medical costs and we ask the foster to provide high quality food, litter (for cats), and toys. Foster homes must also agree to a home inspection visit and to bringing the pet to an adoption event on Saturdays.

As a foster home, you may choose to care for a puppy, kitten, dog, or cat. Most pets are placed within 2 weeks to 2 months; however, some adult cats and dogs may take a little longer. Our current foster parents tell us they receive great satisfaction being the first stop rescued pets make on their way to a loving home.

For more information on fostering or to set up a home visit, call 317-774-8292 or email: foster@adoptarpo.org

The dogs and cats of central Indiana appreciate anything that you can contribute to make their lives better.
